2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves in a Cylinder Head on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: The first step to removing the valves is to remove the cylinder heads. Remove the rocker arms and lash adjusters, then work on the camshaft bearing caps and finally on the camshaft. Attach one of the C-3422-B or C-3422-C Valve Spring Compressors to Tool 8519 Adapter to compress the valve spring and tap the top of the spring if the retainer locks are caught. Push the lock bids in to remove the two halves, making sure not to lose control of the valve spring compressor because of its tension. Following that, remove the valve spring compressor, the spring retainer and the spring itself and use a small file to remove any burrs from the valve stem after checking the keeper grooves for sharp edges before you pull the valve from the cylinder head. Because valve stem seals are interchangeable, just remove one and label the corresponding valve for correct installation. Valve springs should be checked and tested for use again whenever valves are removed. Visually check the parts, then check the spring load with C-647 at the test length and replace any that fail the specifications given. Before installing the valve, cover it with clean engine oil and push it into the cylinder head and precede to fit the valve stem seal in place, leaving the garter spring intact. Afterward, attach the spring to the valve, compress it with the compressor, insert the halves of the retainer and install them both. Take off the compressor and position every part properly. Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft journals, line up the dowels on the camshafts with left at 11 o'clock and the right at 12 o'clock and then fit the camshaft bearing caps where they should go. Place the camshaft bearing cap bolts, tighten them to 9 - 13 Nm one-half turn at a time and then position both the hydraulic lash adjusters and rocker arms.
