Q: How to Safely Extract the Crankshaft from an Engine on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: First, remove the engine from your car and then pull out the engine oil pump before you remove the crankshaft. The oil pan gasket must not be pushed on, as it is attached in multiple places to the cylinder block and can't be disconnected with the oil pan. Next, remove each of the bedplate mounting bolts, noting where the two stud bolts were and then remove the connecting rods, making sure not to scratch the important seal between the bedplate and cylinder block. Be careful when moving the bedplate which holds the lower main bearing halves, to keep the bearings safe, since mixing up the crankshaft and bearings can cause serious problems. With a pry bar, use the cast points around the bedplate to separate it and then remove the crankshaft and crankshaft tone wheel. Check if the connecting and main bearing bores are scored, blue or have severe scratches, as further work to disassemble may come up. If the parts in the connecting rod bearing bores are damaged, the cylinder heads are taken off to work on the pistons and rods; if either the bedplate or cylinder block bores are damaged, the complete engine needs to be changed. If necessary, take the main bearing half out of both the cylinder block and the bedplate, clean the sealing surfaces and main bearing bores well and inspect the bedplate's main bearing spindles and crankshaft's thrust washers. Before installing, lubricate the upper main bearing halves with fresh engine oil, attach the crankshaft tone wheel and tighten the mounting screws to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). Hold the crankshaft in place, put on the thrust washers and insert the crankspins into the cylinder block. Slather the bedplate to cylinder block mating surface with Mopar Engine RTV sealant so it doesn't leak oil too much and then apply a 2.5 mm (0.100 inch) bead of the sealant there. Rub clean engine oil on the crankshaft main bearing journals and add clean engine oil to the bedplate retaining bolts at the cylinder block. Ensure the bedplate retaining bolts are installed, placing the stud bolts correctly and tighten the nuts as mentioned, first hand tightening the selected bolts so the bedplate sits accurately, secondly tightening down to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), then 7 Nm (5 ft. lbs.), continuing with an extra 90° turn and finally down to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) on the others. First, measure the crankshaft end play, then install the connecting rods and measure their side clearance, add the oil pump next and finally put the engine back.
