2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Wheel Bearings on a C213R Rear Axle on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: You should hoist the rear axle C213R on a lift and set it in neutral before starting service. Remove both the calipers and rotors, then hit the axle plug out of the flange with a hammer and punch to pull it out. After that, detach the speed sensors from the axle tube flange and remove the nuts from the axle flange. Screw the axle shaft out of the axle tube while the backing plate is being pulled out and once the axle has been removed, slide off the O-ring from the axle bearing. Pull the axle shaft from the rest of its parts and then tap it free of the wheel flange and bearing from the other side of the wheel through the plug hole. After getting rid of the old axle flange bolts, place the new ones into the axle flange. Insert the axle shaft through the hole in the axle bearing, into the rear of the wheel flange. After that, assemble the axle shaft and plate together on the axle tube, using a replacement O-ring on the axle shaft. Pass the O-ring through the backing plate and push the axle through until you can see the bearing, then get the O-ring onto the exposed bearing. Put the axle into the axle tube and then install and tighten the axle flange nuts to 119 Nm (88 ft. lbs.). Put the speed sensors back on the axle tube flange, pat a layer of Mopar Stud N' Bearing Mount Adhesive on a new axle flange plug and insert the plug into the tube flange. After that, put the calipers and rotors back.
