2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Bearing on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: To work on axle bearings, first lift the vehicle with a hoist and place it in neutral. With the calipers and rotors gone, hammer and punch the wheel flange until the axle end plug comes loose and then pull it out. After that, remove the speed sensors from the axle tube and unscrew the axle flange nut from the throat of the axle. Take out the axle shaft and backing plate from the axle tube until the axle bearing shows up, then get rid of the O-ring in the bearing. Slip the axle shaft from the wheel side over the axle tube and backing plate and gently tap it out with a hammer and brass drift through the plug hole. After the old axle flange bolts are out, put the new ones into the axle flange. Insert the axle shaft through the bearing into the wheel flange and then attach the axle shaft to the axle tube and backing plate with a fresh O-ring at the axle. Put the O-ring through the backing plate opening, then push the axle through until you see the bearing, add the O-ring to the bearing and push the axle into the axle tube. Install the axle flange nuts and tighten them to 119 Nm (88 ft. lbs.), after that mount the speed sensors onto the axle tube flange. Apply the Mopar Stud N' Bearing Mount adhesive or a similar glue to the new axle flange plug and then fit it onto the axle using a freeze plug installer. Finally, hook the calipers and rotors back into place.
