2005 Jeep Liberty Piston Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace Engine Pistons on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: The first thing to do is to take out the Cylinder Head before you remove or replace the pistons. Remove the top ridge of each cylinder bore with a good ridge reamer, covering the piston tops as you do so and marking each with the corresponding cylinder number. After that, pull out the oil pan and place marks on the cylinder number near both the rod and the cap. Make sure to notice that the pistons show a symbol which is stamped on the front side closer to the front end of the engine. Featureless Professional Engine Rebuilding Manual As soon as the bearings are removed, mount the bearing cap on top of the piston rod because the pistons and rods are removed and refitted as a unite. When installing, spread the compression ring gaps out and place the ends of the oil ring expander against corresponding rail gaps. Place the piston head and rings in clean oil and after that, cover them with the ring compressor, not changing the order of the rings. The piston should have its directional stamp pointing towards the front of the engine. Rotate the crankshaft to make the connecting rod journal centered in the cylinder bore and slide in the whole assembly, guiding its rod over the crankshaft's journal as you do. Open the piston and then, while guiding the connecting rod, strike the top of the piston with a hammer handle until it settles in the cylinder bore. Replace the old connecting rod cap bolts with new ones, apply engine oil to the threaded ends of the bolts, install them all finger tight and then torque each bolt with your hands to assemble the cap without touching the threads of any bolts with a torque wrench. After that, tighten the bolts to a torque of 54 Nm plus 1/4 turn and use a feeler gauge to measure the connecting rod side play.
