2005 Jeep Liberty Timing Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Address Issues with a Timing Belt Tensioner on a 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before getting to the timing belt tensioner and pulley, take off the timing belt and the timing belt idler pulley. With Special Tool 6847 keeping the camshaft sprocket from moving, remove the bolt and then take off both sprockets. The next step is to take off the rear timing belt cover fasteners and pull off the cover from the engine. Unlock the lower bolt on the timing belt tensioner assembly and take out the whole tensioner assembly. For installation, put the assembly close to the engine and add the lower mounting bolt, but don't tighten it. Correct placement of the tensioner assembly can be ensured by putting one engine bracket mounting bolt (M10) 5 to 7 turns into its upper mounting area. Turn the lower tensioner bolt 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) and take out the upper bolt used for aligning the tensioner. Set up the timing belt cover over the rear and tighten its bolts, then place the timing belt idler pulley and fix its mounting bolt at a torque of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). With Special Tool 6847 in place, attach the camshaft sprockets and turn the bolts to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). Afterward, install the timing belt.
