2005 Jeep Wrangler Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a 216FBI Single Cardan Universal Joint on 2005 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before you remove the axle shaft and the bearing cap retaining snap rings, it's important to first soak the bearing caps with penetrating oil. With a socket about one-half (1/2) inch larger than the bearing cap on the yoke and bearing cap you want out, place the other socket-careful, it must be smaller than the cap-on the outside perimeter of the cap that stays. Place the yoke in a vise, with the bearing cap in one socket and the solid rod attached to the other socket and tighten the jaws to push the bearing cap into the socket. Once the vise jaws are removed, take out both sockets together with the bearing cap that came out and run this process again for the cross at the other end of the propeller shaft yoke. Put wheel bearing lubricant into the bearing caps up to one-third and use EP lithium lubricant which will help in the installation. Place the cross in the yoke, slide in both seals and bearings and tap the caps on top of the bearings until they're seated in the yoke holes. Affix one bearing cap to a socket and tighten the yoke in a vise, so the bearing caps go inside the yoke enough to be attached by the clips. After that, set the bearing cap retaining clips and the axle shaft in place.
