How Can Universal Joints Be Serviced and Assembled Individually on 2004 Jeep Wrangler?

An individual single Cardan joint cannot be serviced but must be swapped out with the entire system. After removing the drift from the bearing cap, tap the snap rings with it to loosen them, then take out both snap rings from the bearings. Place a socket over the yoke, under the bearing cap, so the bearing cap settles inside the socket, with the press's grease fitting facing upwards if equipped. Locate another socket with a small outside diameter under the bearing cap above and use it to press the bare lower bearing cap into the yoke. Take out the bearing cap from the yoke by hand or by tapping the yoke above the cap. After turning the yoke, line the open hole with the cross straight and push the rest of the cross until the other cap comes off. Apply about one millimeter of Extreme Pressure (EP) N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease to the inner part of the yoke bores. If your crane has a lube fitting, align it so that the fitting's end faces up in the cross and place a bearing cap over the cross trunnion and push it down into the yoke bore. Work the bearing cap into the bore of the yoke enough to pass the snap ring grove and install the snap ring afterward. Do the same steps to install the second bearing cap. Stiff joints or those that bind should be pounded on the yoke with a soft hammer to start the needle bearings, with the exception of those without a lube fitting.
