2006 Chrysler Crossfire Steering Wheel Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Remove and Install a Steering Wheel While Ensuring Proper Alignment on 2006 Chrysler Crossfire?
A: First, separate the negative battery cable to stop the supplemental restraint system, let the system capacitor discharge by waiting a couple minutes and resist the urge to restart the vehicle before ensuring the air bag will not activate. Always put on safety gear, including rubber gloves, eye protection and a shirt that covers your arms, when dealing with an air bag. First, pull back the adjustable steering column, move the steering wheel so it lines up with the front wheels and take out the ignition key to lock the steering. After removing the air bag screws, use a long hex tool to pull out the tapered steering bolt, while you maintain the wheel in its place. Remove the steering wheel after passing the air bag connector out of its hole in the steering wheel. Inspect both the horn/air bag and clock spring contacts and replace if they appear damaged. Always disable the supplemental restraint system when installing the seat. If more than 1 tooth separates the steering wheel from its central position, the turn signal indicator will be misaligned. You should not see the Steering System Malfunction Light come on if the wheel is turned completely. Guide the splines of the steering wheel towards the lines indicated on the steering shaft, attach the tapered steering bolt and tighten it to 80 Nm (60 ft. lbs.), after that attach the air bag to the steering wheel.
