2006 Chrysler Pacifica Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: Can a Water Pump Be Replaced Without Discharging the AC System, and How to Avoid Coolant Burns on 2006 Chrysler Pacifica?
A: All models can have their water pump swapped out and the air conditioning system does not need to be emptied, but being cautious keeps you safe from burns while the system is charged. It is usual for a small amount of coolant to escape from the weep hole, leaving a black stain on the water pump, but if the deposit is heavy or the engine coolant flows regularly from the weep hole, this suggests the shaft seal has failed and the water pump needs to be replaced once it has been completely checked. To start, drain the radiator, get rid of the timing belt, then take out the water pump mounting bolts, noting the length and side of one of the bolts for future use and remove the water pump body from inside the engine. Watch out for damage, cracks, leaks, impellers rubbing against the rear timing belt cover and loose or rough movement in the pump's bearings, but a small black mark beneath the pump weep hole is normal. While installing, clean every O-ring surface on both parts, grease the O-ring with Mopar Dielectric Grease or another silicone grease and fit a new O-ring on the water pump. Attach the water pump to the engine, secure it with the mounting bolts, tighten them to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.), together with timing belt, then fill the cooling system.
