2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Water Pump on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Start by draining the cooling system and removing the timing belt, camshaft sprockets and cover for the rear timing belt. Pull out the screws connecting the water pump to the engine and release the pump. For disassembling, first pull out the three hex bolts and washers connecting the power steering pump to the water pump. Place a 1/4 inch drive 10 mm socket through the coolant inlet tube and back it into the heater hose fitting spot to reach the water pump impeller hex. Introduce a 1/4 inch drive extension into the heater hose fitting and turn it to hook up with the hex of the water pump impeller. Grab the power steering pump shaft with a hex wrench and, with the ratchet, turn the extension counterclockwise to loosen the water pump and pull it away. If you choose to reuse the water pump, the socket and extension should stay inside where they are until you reassemble them. For clean removal of the water pump inlet cover, remove all the fasteners and throw out the O-ring seal. Look around the water pump body for leaks, cracks, problems with bearings, damage to the impeller or contact with the engine or pump body and injuries to the sprocket. When first installing the inlet cover, moisten a fresh O-ring with Mopar Dielectric Grease, insert it in the groove for the cover and fit it in place with the seven screws (12 Nm or 105 inch lbs.). When installing them, fit the power steering pump pulley first and then insert the water pump onto the power steering pump shaft, lining up its outlet as it goes into the top holes. If you have not accessed the impeller hex in the last steps, follow them again to reach it. Twist the extension which you are holding with the power steering pump shaft, clockwise with a ratchet to apply 26 Nm or 19 ft. lbs. of torque to the water pump impeller. After the socket, extension, ratchet and hex wrench are removed, put the fastener holes from the pump together and insert three hex drive bolts with washers, tighten them to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.). After putting Mopar Dielectric Grease on a new O-ring, put it in place in the water pump groove and then screw the pump body onto the block (Tightening screws to 12 Nm or 105 inch lbs.). Spin the pump with your hand to confirm movement, pour water into the cooling system, increase the pressure to 103 kPa (15 psi) and check whether any leaks appear at both the shaft seal and O-ring. After that, set the rear timing belt cover and the camshaft sprockets once more, then place the timing belt as well.
