Generally Chrysler PT Cruiser Water Pumps are known to be belt-driven off the crankshaft, however, the usage of electric water pumps is gradually increasing, Some of its advantages include parasitic loss and independent coolant flow. Throughout the existence of Chrysler PT Cruiser, there have been many kinds of Water Pump designs which may consist of aluminium casting for more recent types and older models may have used cast iron. There is also Performance-oriented Water Pumps which is improved for better flow and better coolant efficiency which is good for high performance engines. These pumps can be mechanical or electric, although the option of electric pumps is characterized by possibilities in positioning and operation which makes it fit in custom systems.

Chrysler PT Cruiser Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace the Power Steering Pump and Water Pump on Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A:
First, loosen and remove the three hex drive bolts and their washers that help secure the power steering pump to the water pump. Use a 1/4 inch drive 10 mm socket for the coolant inlet tube and back it into where the heater hose fits to get to the water pump impeller hex. With one hand holding the socket, slide a One-quarter inch drive extension inside the heater hose fitting into the 10 mm socket and press the socket and extension on top of the pump. Place a hex wrench across the pulley end to stop the power steering pump shaft and use a ratchet to turn the extension by about 90 degrees counterclockwise as you hold it; the water pump will slowly come away from the steering pump as you do that. After disengaging the belt, carefully remove the whole water pump assembly from the power steering pump; however, keep the 10 mm socket and extension inside if you'll reuse them. If you need to remove the water pump inlet cover, take out all seven fasteners on the pump and drop off the O-ring type seal. Should you have to remove the power steering pump pulley, use the correct maintenance steps. Make sure to read the instructions for each section that must be reassembled.
  • Q: How to Install a Power Steering Pump and Water Pump on Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A:
Apply Mopar(R) Dielectric Grease or an equivalent to the New water pump O-ring seal and place this seal into the housing groove where the cover gets in contact with the housing. Secure the seven fasteners along the pump's edges and tighten each one to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) torque. Slide the water pump onto the shaft and turn it so the water pump outlet is close to the upper holes on the top of the power steering pump and make sure all three pump fastener holes are lined up. If the water pump impeller hex is out of reach, push a 1/4 inch drive extension onto a 1/4 inch drive 10 mm socket inserted into the coolant inlet tube's fitting with the heater hose. Grab the pump shaft using a hex wrench and use a ratchet to tighten the water pump impeller by turning the extension clockwise. The impeller should now be pulled closer to the power steering pump and should be fastened to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.) of torque. Take out the socket, extension, ratchet and hex wrench and then line up the three holes in the pump fasteners with three hex drive bolts and washers. Tighten the bolts until you reach 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.), then place the pump on the vehicle.
