2006 Chrysler Town & Country Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2006 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: Before handling the timing cover, disconnect the negative cable and release all the coolant from the engine. Use a hoist to lift the vehicle up and drain your engine oil. Take out the right wheel, remove the splash shield and after that, get rid of the oil pan and oil pick-up tube. Following that, take out the accessory drive belt, A/C compressor, crankshaft vibration damper and radiator lower hose. Take the heater hose off the timing chain cover housing or water pump inlet if your engine has an oil cooler. Open the car and disconnect the right side mount, pulley from the engine, remove the camshaft position sensor from the timing chain cover and remove the idler pulley from the engine bracket. To clear this space, unfasten the power steering pump support strut with its bolt, detach the pump, remove the water pump and take off the fasteners and cover secured by the timing chain. Clear off any dirt or burrs on the surfaces where the chain case cover and cylinder block mate, remove the oil seal and do not apply sealant to the gasket of the chain case cover. Fasten a new gasket to the timing cover so that the lower edge of the flange is 0.5 mm (0.020 in.) past the bottom of the cover. Turn the crankshaft so the side known as the oil pump drive flats is vertical and line up the crankshaft drive flats with the oil pump's inner rotor. Attach the timing cover with the provided bolts and tighten it as detailed below: M8 bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) and M10 bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). First, install the oil seal for the crankshaft front, then put in the water pump and pulley, end with the crankshaft vibration damper. Install the engine mount bracket, using M10 bolts and torque them to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), while using M8 bolts and torque them to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Add on the idler pulley, the camshaft position sensor and the right side engine mount. Assemble the heater return hose, radiator lower hose and A/C compressor before you install the accessory drive belt. With an O-ring on the tube, mount it then tighten the bolt to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.), then install the oil pan. Hook up the negative cable to the battery, then put in the inner splash shield and right front wheel, add enough engine oil to the crankcase, fill the cooling system and shut the radiator cap.
