Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Brake Caliper on 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Before you begin, press the brake pedal past the first millimeter and keep it held there with a brake pedal depressor. Lift the vehicle and take off the back wheel and tire group. Unplug the brake hose from the caliper by loosening the banjo bolt and throwing out the washers that are removed with it. Second, undo the caliper guide pin bolts and lift up the front part of the caliper, while pulling the rest of the caliper down from under the abutment. Depending on the situation, loosen the retainer clips and tug the brake rotor directly off of the studs. Make sure the caliper is cleaned before starting to disassemble it and have it hanging off the rotor. Use hydraulic force to make the piston move out of the bore and while it's moving out, hold the brake pedal down. After you disconnect the brake fluid flex hose, attach the caliper into a vise with protective clamps. Gently lift away the dust boot, remove the old piston seal with a soft tool, clean the bore carefully and look for damage. Clean one piston seal, dip it in brake fluid, put it into the groove, add some fluid to a new piston boot and place it over the piston's exposed end. Use even pressure to install the piston into the caliper bore, so it doesn't get stuck. Use the C-4689 or C-4842 Special Tool and the C-4171 Handle, to push the dust boot into place. Research cover the caliper, take out the piston to the end and, if needed, place back the brake rotor. Guide the caliper over the adapter, make sure no harm comes to the guide pin bushings and put in the guide pin bolts, tightening them to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). As you attach the brake hose, fit in fresh special washers, snap the banjo bolt until it tightens to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) and reinstall the wheel and tire. First, torque the wheel mounting stud nuts to just below the required torque and go back to finish them at 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Drop the vehicle, take out the pedal depressor, purge the brake line and perform a test drive to see if the brake works well.
