2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Dimmer Switch on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Turn off the supplemental restraint system by unplugging the battery negative cable and letting the core in it discharge for two minutes, before you begin to service or repair the combination switch. Take out the driver air bag from the steering wheel and disconnect the harness wires from the Clock Spring. Make sure the screws holding the steering wheel puller are tight and don't touch the Clock Spring. Following this, pull out the steering wheel and remove the screw that keeps the tilt column knob fixed to the steering column. Take the knob off too. Below the steering column, remove the two screws holding the top shroud to the bottom piece and then gently force in both sides of the top shroud to let go of the snap fasteners. Remove the first shroud above the steering wheel, then the middle screw connecting the lower shroud to the column and lift off the second shroud. Grab the wire harness connector at the back of the multi-function switch housing and disconnect it. Then, open the screws that hold the switch in place on the mounting housing. Turn the fuse switch stalk in line with the left side of the dashboard to remove it. Slide the multi-function switch firmly into the mounting housing, so that the alignment pins are all in place. Then put in and tighten the screws that hold the switch. Use the wire harness to join the switch housing and the housing connector, fix the lower shroud onto the steering column and lastly install the center screw to support the shroud. Drop the upper shroud in place over the lower shroud and use the gearshift lever gap hider if it is there to help the process. Secure the upper shroud with the screws and then put the tilt steering column knob onto the tilt adjuster actuator and tighten the screw you have inserted. Before installing the steering wheel, place the yellow rubber booted engagement dowel between the fins of the steering wheel armature hub on the Clock Spring rotor. Attach the steering wheel back into place, then bind the steering wheel wire harness, add the driver air bag and lastly attach the battery negative cable.
