2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Clock Spring Assembly on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: It is important, when servicing or repairing the Clock Spring Assembly or Spiral Cable, to ensure the front wheels are straight and disconnect the negative battery cable, then let the system capacitor discharge for two minutes before proceeding. Taking the driver air bag off the steering wheel, disconnect the wire harness on the steering wheel from the Clock Spring connectors on the dash assembly. After unbolting the steering wheel, confirm that the pullers do not harm the Clock Spring and after that, lift the steering column opening cover and unmoved the tilt knob. Remove the screws holding the upper column shroud to the lower shroud, then press in on both sides of the upper shroud to free it from its snaps. Then, take out the screw at the center of the lower shroud and unplug the instrument panel wire harness connectors from the Clock Spring housing. Unscrew the Clock Spring from its mounting housing, lift it out and make sure to replace it if it does not work correctly or if the air bag has been deployed. If using the Clock Spring again, make sure the rotor is secure to maintain its center when you reinstall it. Front wheels must be straight for installation, then place the centered Clock Spring over the steering column and match the locating tab with the pin on the multi-function switch mounting housing. Secure the Clock Spring in place, join the wire harness connectors again and place the lower shroud on the steering column, sealing it with the middle screw. Fit the upper shroud into place over the lower shroud, join them together and hold them by tightening outboard screws. Set the tilt steering column knob, the steering column opening cover and-if the Clock Spring is new-open and remove the plastic locking pin. Before installing the battery negative cable, correctly place the rubber-covered engagement dowel in the yellow cavity, connect the steering wire harness and slip the driver air bag in place.
