2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Water Pump on 3.7L/4.7L Engines on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before working on the water pump of 3.7L/4.7L engines, remove the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system. Make sure the fan/viscous fan drive assembly is still connected to the vehicle when you turn it away from the water pump. Wear protective eyewear and use appropriate tools when you begin this work. Never remove the fan blade from the thermal fan drive if you want to replace your water pump. After that, detach the radiator fan, the accessory drive belt and the lower hose clamp before you can remove the lower radiator hose from the water pump. Be sure to remove the water pump mounting bolts quietly, rather than prying at the timing chain case/cover to protect it. Remove the water pump and throw away its gasket and make sure you do not damage the sealed surface while cleaning it. Verify the water pump assembly for noticeable leaks, cracks or any damages to the area. Installation process involves washing the surfaces where the gasket will meet, fitting the gasket and the pump and fixing the mounting bolts until they reach 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Make sure the pump impeller does not rub against the timing chain case/cover when it spins. Put the lower radiator hose back in place, let go of the tensioner and mount the drive belt so that everything is correctly routed. Attach the radiator fan, fill the cooling system, connect the negative battery cable back and run the engine to look for leaks.
