2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Water Pump on 3.7L/4.7L Engines on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before you start the water pump replacement, disconnect the negative terminal on the battery and empty the cooling system. Loosen the fan/viscous fan drive assembly at the water pump without completely separating it from your vehicle. Have tools strategically made for constant tension hose clamps on hand and remember to wear safety glasses when servicing them. When installing a new water pump, be sure not to remove the fan blade assembly from the thermal viscous fan drive. Remove the fan for the radiator, the accessory drive belt and the clamp for the lower radiator hose before you take off the hose from the water pump. When removing the water pump mounting bolts, don't pry at the timing chain case/cover, as this can hurt the engine. Open and remove the water pump, discard the gasket and then carefully clean the mating surface of the gasket. Look over the water pump assembly for any indications of cracks, leaks or damage. When installing, clean the mating surfaces, position the new gasket and pump and screw the mounting bolts to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Make sure the pump impeller moves without touching the timing chain case/cover. Hook the lower radiator hose back, release the belt tensioner and correctly seat the drive belt so it does not cause heating trouble. Set up the radiator fan, return the cooling fluid to the system, link back the negative battery cable and operate the motor to examine for leaks.
