2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install and Adjust a Belt Tensioner on 3.7L and 4.7L Engines on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Both 3.7L and 4.7L engines have an indexing tang in the back and an indexing stop on the housing and if you install a new belt, it should be within about 24 mm (.94 inches) of the indexing stop which is about 15 minutes of usage. If the required specification is not achieved, analyze if the assortment is wrong, any engine accessory bearing is worn out, all engine accessories have loose pulleys, housing is not in alignment or the belt is installed incorrectly. Replacing the belt is necessary if the tensioner indexing arrow gets to the minimum tension point, because the tensioner doesn't move any further. You first should remove the accessory drive belt, then the tensioner assembly from its bracket, always keeping in mind that assembly includes the automatic tensioner as we do not open it since it has high-pressure springs inside. Subsequently, take out the pulley bolt and the pulley from the tensioner. First, install the pulley and its bolt on the tensioner and tighten the bolt to 61 Nm. Place the tensioner indexing slot over the bolt head, then put and tighten the mounting bolt to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). After that, fit the accessory drive belt and observe where the belt indexing marks should be.
