2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service an Air Bag and Replace Its Trim Cover and Horn Switch Unit on 2006 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: First, disconnect and isolate the red negative cable on the battery, then give the system two minutes to allow the air bag capacitor to safely drain. The only ones qualified to service your car are licensed and authorized by Daimler-Chrysler and great care should be given to avoid putting foreign objects into the air bag or between the cushion and the trim cover. Do not paint the driver's air bag trim cover, because new covers are available for original colors and safe deployment. Disconnect the car battery, remove the driver air bag from the wheel and place it on a nice, dry surface upside down with the trim cover at the bottom. Pull the horn switch feed pigtail wire connector away from the air bag housing, remove the nut attaching the horn switch ground pigtail wire eyelet terminal to the inflator stud and pull all twelve air bag housing hooks away from the trim cover. Move everything-the housing, inflation device and cushion-as a group away from the cover on the trim panel. Lay the driver air bag on a safe place with the cushion facing up, fold the cushion flaps over the air bag retainer strap, fit the new trim cover over the cushion and press it flat. Flip the unit over and check that the horn switch wires have been routed properly, fit the unit with the mounted hooks placed all around the perimeter, add the end of the ground pigtail wire to the eyelet terminal, connect that to the inflator stud and secure the nut with 65 in. lbs. of torque. Join the horn switch feed pigtail wire connection to its place, double-check that the blocking tab in every trim cover window is facing the right way and then put the air bag back onto the steering wheel.
