2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 A/C Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an A/C Clutch on 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500?
A: You should begin servicing the compressor clutch by unhooking and isolating the battery's negative cable before taking off the drive serpentine belt. Lift off the engine wire harness from the clutch coil connector on the room air conditioning compressor. After that, take out the bolt connecting the compressor clutch to the shaft with a band-type oil filter wrench or strap wrench, if those are needed. Gently knock the clutch plate with a plastic mallet so it will come away from the splines without misplacing the shim(s). Separate the pulley from the clutch by sliding it out while removing the external snap ring held by snap ring pliers (Special Tool C-4574). Undo the screw securing the wire harness connector bracket, ground clip and clutch coil to the top of the compressor housing and remove the external snap ring. When installing, put the clutch coil on the compressor with the back of the clutch field coil passing through the hole in the compressor front cover and make sure there isn't any pressure on the wire harness. Before moving on with installation, put a new snap ring on the clutch coil, making sure the bevel side is toward the outside. Install the external snap ring with pliers, so that it is fully inside the groove to avoid the clutch from breaking. Secure the compressor wire harness, together with the clutch coil wire harness connector bracket and ground clip, onto the top of the clutch housing. Fit the pulley onto the front of the compressor, making sure you avoid scraping the surface with a block of wood and put in the external snap ring so that the beveled side is visible from outside. If you are reinstalling the old clutch plate and pulley, put back the factory shim(s). If using new items, stick one shim 1.0 mm (0.040 in.) thick on the compressor shaft shoulder. Slide the clutch plate onto the shaft and attach it by tightening the compressor shaft bolt to 17.5 N.m (155 in. lbs.) if you need a wrench. Following tightening, look at several places in the air gap to verify it is correct and verify by spinning the pulley. The presence of an air gap should be looked at after installing new parts. Install the retainer for the compressor clutch coil lead, attach the engine wire harness connector, refit the serpentine accessory drive belt, rehook the negative side of the battery cable and burnish the clutch parts where necessary.
