2006 Jeep Commander Alternator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Alternator on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin any work on the alternator so you avoid causing harm to the electrical parts. Take out the generator drive belt, lift the plastic insulator cap off of the B+ output and remove the nut that secures the B+ terminal at the rear. Following this, pull out the rear field wire connector by pressing on the tab, then loosen one back bolt and two front bolts on the generator mountings and remove the unit from the vehicle. To install, fit the generator to the engine and put in two horizontal bolts and one vertical bolt, tightening them all to 40 ft. lbs. Next, snap the rear connector to the generator field wire and attach the B+ terminal eyelet to the generator output stud, tightening this nut to 108 in. lbs. Be careful not to push a belt using a screwdriver over the pulley's screw, because this may damage the belt. Route the serpentine accessory drive belt properly so that the water pump spins correctly and engine overheating is prevented. After that, fit the drive belt onto the generator and link the negative cable back to the battery.
