2006 Jeep Commander Battery Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain Battery Cables on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Before working on the battery cables, check that the ignition is off and all electrical additions are disconnected. If necessary, pull the negative terminal cable clamp from its post by using a battery terminal puller. Raise the battery cable positive terminal cover and unlock the pinch-bolt nut with the socket wrench. After that, carefully remove the cable terminal clamp from the battery post. Loosen the screw holding the battery negative cable eyelet terminal to the inner fender, lift the PDC and IPM cover and take out the two nuts holding the battery positive cable to the studs in the PDC before the one on the IPM stud. Remove the battery wire harness three pin connector by undoing it from the battery tray. Unscrew the nut holding the output cable eyelet terminal of the generator to its output terminal stud on 3.7L and 4.7L engines and remove the battery wire harness connector from the generator field terminal connector receptacle. For this generator, carry out the same process for the 5.7L engine output cable. Place the car on a hoist, take off the bolt connecting the battery negative cable ground eyelet terminal to the engine block and take out the nut securing the battery positive cable eyelet terminal to the B(+) terminal stud on the starter solenoid. Remove both wires coming from the starter solenoid and remove the entire battery harness from the engine compartment. First, clean and examine the battery cable terminal clamps and posts, position the battery wire harness and lift the vehicle again. Join the battery wire harness retaining clips to the engine, put the battery wire harness connector back onto the starter solenoid, fit the battery positive cable eyelet terminal to the B+ terminal stud and turn the nut until it reaches 11 N.m. Secure the battery negative cable terminal to the engine block with a bolt attached tightly, turn the car upright and connect the battery wire harness retaining clips to the valve cover studs. Connect the battery harness wire to the generator terminal connector for the correct engine type, fasten the generator output cable eyelet terminal to the generator output terminal stud and fix it with a nut at 14 N.m. Connect the battery wire harness retaining clip to the valve cover stud so that it fits well and attaches the battery wire harness three pin connector to the battery tray. Fasten the battery positive cable eyelet terminals to the respective B(+) terminal studs in the PDC and IPM using nuts at 11.5 N.m. After that, put the negative cable terminal clamp back onto the negative terminal post and coat the exposed areas on the terminal clamps and posts with either petroleum jelly or chassis grease.
