Jeep Commander Battery Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Are Battery Cables Installed on Jeep Commander?
    A:
Before you begin, clear and view the terminal clamps and the battery terminal posts. Place the battery wire harness assembly in the vehicle and raise it up on a lift. Dismount the battery wire harness retaining clips from the frame and fasten them to the engine by hand. Screw the positive battery eyelet terminal terminal onto the B(+) stud on the starter solenoid until it's tight, applying 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.) of torque. After that, put in and tighten the bolt that links the negative cable terminal to the engine block at a level of 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.). Reduce the vehicle's height and attach the battery wire harness packing clips or nuts to the valve cover studs. For 5.7L engines, attach the battery wire harness connector to the back generator field terminal connector receptacle and insert the generator output cable eyelet terminal on the generator output terminal stud with a nut tightened to 14 Nm (125 in. lbs.). Afterwards, reconnect the battery wire harness connector to the generator field terminal connector receptacle for both 3.7L and 4.7L engines and then install the generator output cable eyelet terminal as seen in figure 8. Slide the battery wire harness retaining clip onto the valve cover stud and press the battery wire harness three pin connector onto the Battery Tray, then link them. Install the positive battery cable eyelet terminals onto the B(+) studs in the Power Distribution Center and Integrated Power Module and fasten them with nuts turned until they reach 11.5 Nm (105 in. lbs.) swiftness. Seal the covers of the PDC and IPM after that, then install the battery negative cable eyelet terminal to the inner Fender secured with 28 Nm (20.5 ft. lbs.) of torque. Place the terminal clamp pinch-bolt back in place, tightening its hex nut to 5.5 Nm (50 in. lbs.) and then secure the cover on top. Loosely fit the nut on the battery cable terminal clamp, slide the battery cable onto it and connect the terminal clamp to the battery post. Screw the nut tightly to 5.5 Nm (50 in. lbs.). Then, grease the exposed surfaces of the battery cable terminal clamps and battery terminal posts.
  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix Battery Cables on Jeep Commander?
    A:
Prior to servicing or repairing the battery cables, switch off the ignition and unplug all electrical accessories. With the help a battery terminal puller, take out the battery negative cable clamp from the post of the battery. Raise the cover over the battery positive cable terminal clamp bolt, then remove the clamp from the battery positive terminal post using a battery puller if you need to. Remove the screw binding the battery negative cable to the inner Fender and next unlatch and open the cover of the Power Distribution Center and Integrated Power Module. Unscrew the two battery positive cable eyelet terminal nuts from the B(+) terminal studs in the PDC and the IPM, then take out both battery positive cable eyelet terminals from their studs. Take out the battery wire harness three pin connector and free it from the Battery Tray. On 3.7L and 4.7L engines, unscrew the nut securing the generator output cable eyelet terminal to the generator output terminal stud and remove the battery wire harness connector from the generator field terminal connector receptacle located on the back of the generator. Take out the battery wire harness retaining clip that is attached to the valve cover stud. For 5.7L engines, remove the nut that holds the generator output cable eyelet terminal to the generator output terminal stud and disconnect the battery wire harness connector from the generator field terminal receptor. Disconnect the harness clips attaching the wire harness to the studs on the valve cover and then raise the vehicle with a hoist. Remove the bolt attaching the negative cable ground eyelet terminal to the engine block and the nut on the positive cable terminal at the B(+) stud on the starter solenoid. After that, remove the positive cable terminal from the B(+) stud. Separate the battery wire harness contact from the starter solenoid, take off the retaining clips from the engine and then remove the battery wire harness from the vehicle's engine compartment.
