2006 Jeep Commander Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Catalytic Converter on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: When servicing or repairing the catalytic converter, put the car on a stand, apply heat valve lubricant to the screws and nuts and let it work for 5 minutes before continuing. Take out the transmission crossmember piece, separate and mark the electrical connections to the oxygen sensor and remove (5) bolt from the steady rest support mounting bracket. After that, remove the nuts from the front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter assembly to the muffler flange and then remove the bolts (2) and flanged nuts (1) at the exhaust manifold. Take out the front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter assembly (3) from the vehicle and get rid of the steady rest bracket (4) on it. Check the outer casing of the converter for any swelling and if that's the case, hit the base of the catalyst with a rubber mallet to find out if its core is still intact. First, install the steady rest bracket (4) on the front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter assembly (3) and then return both to the original spot in the vehicle. Fit the bolts and nuts onto the front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter assembly (3) without tightening, then connect the nuts to the muffler flange in the same way. The space between the exhaust pipe and the frame and underbody should measure a minimum of 25.4 mm (1.0 inch). Align both bolts in the front exhaust and fasten to exhaust manifold with 26 Nm (19 inch lbs.) torque and the two nuts under the muffler flange with a 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) effort. After bolting the steady rest bracket to 47 Nm, restore the oxygen sensor wires to their original location, put back the transmission crossmember, lower the vehicle and start it to see if there are exhaust leaks and fix them as needed.
