2006 Jeep Commander Windshield Parts and Q&A
Q: How Is a Windshield Installed and Removed with Urethane Adhesive on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Urethane is used cold to seal the edge where the glass joins the window frame and primer guarantees that the adhesive sticks properly. It is not easy to save a windshield when you are removing it, as it helps hold up the roof and the structure of the glass is covered in tough urethane. Check that you can find a new windshield and seals for your vehicle prior to taking the old one out. Take care not to harm painted areas and, using care, remove the rear view mirror, rain sensor module and cowl grille when starting. Gently lower the molding and, together with a friend, use a wire-type windshield cutout tool to untie the urethane adhesive at the top of the windshield. At installation, refrain from using the vehicle for a full day to allow the urethane adhesive to set. Partial roll down of the door glass helps prevent damaging water leaks during installation. If you use the old windshield, carefully cut out much of the original urethane to prevent damaging the paint on the edge of the glass. Rub a little of the old urethane onto the frame before replacing damaged spacers. Thin down the original urethane bead so it's about 1 mm and add new, adhesive-backed spacers where needed. Replacement kits often come with a new rubber seal, so fit this to the top of the windshield and use assistance to place the windshield into the opening, checking for evenness against the car frame as you go. With a marker, label both the windshield and frame and afterward clean the inside of the windshield using cleaner that contains ammonia. Coat the edge of your windshield with glass prep adhesion promoter and glass primer, let it dry and make sure the application is uniform. Make sure you clean the windshield frame and then apply pinch weld primer to it, checking that it dries evenly. Starting at the bottom middle, apply a 10 mm long bead of adhesive and smooth the ends over the whole windshield. Support the windshield, place it over the right place on the vehicle and gently lower it down so that the spacers are in contact with the windshield. As your last step, replace the cowl grille, rear view mirror and rain sensor module.
