2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: For repairs or servicing of axle shafts, support the car on a hoist in neutral. After removing the calipers and rotors, knock the end plug loose from the flange with a hammer and punch and remove it. After that, take the speed sensors from the axle tube flange and the axle flange nuts off the axle. Pull the axle shaft and backing plate out of the tube until the bearing is revealed and then unroll the O-ring from the axle bearing. Remove the axle shaft from the tube and the backing plate and, using a hammer and brass drift, tap it from the axle flange and bearing through the hole in the plug. To set up, insert the axle shaft into the axle bearing and flange, then push the axle shaft into the axle tube and backing plate and put a new O-ring on the axle. Guide the O-ring between the backing plate and axle shaft, push the axle inside the bearing and set the O-ring on the bearing. Drop the axle into the needle bearing, attach the axle flange nuts and tighten them to 119 Nm. Insert the sensors into the axle tube flange, then cover the new plug in the axle tube with stud mounting adhesive and use a freeze plug installer to insert it too. In the end, lock the new calipers and rotors in place.
