2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair the Rear Axle Shaft C213R on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Reaching the rear axle C213R requires placing the vehicle on a hoist while it is in neutral. Take off the calipers and rotors next and knock the plug out from the end of the axle with a hammer and a punch. After that, get the speed sensors from the axle tube flange out and remove the nuts from the axle flange. Remove the axle shaft and backing plate from the axle tube until the axle bearing appears; then, remove the O-ring from the bearing. Tap the axle shaft out of the axle tube, backing plate, bearing and axle flange at the plug hole with a hammer and a brass drift. To place the axle, position it on the axle bearing, flange and axle tube, insert an O-ring and fit everything together with the backing plate. Arrange the O-ring on the backing plate so it goes inside the axle tube, push the axle till the bearing appears, then slide the O-ring onto the axle bearing and push the axle into the tube. Electrically test the axle, turn the axle flange nuts to 119 Nm (88 ft. lbs.), put the new speed sensors in the axle tube flange, apply Mopar Stud N' Bearing Mount Adhesive or an equivalent to the axle flange plug and fit the calipers and rotors.
