2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace Piston Assemblies on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before removing and replacing the piston and connecting rod assemblies, you should first take off the negative cable from the battery and remove the oil pan, gasket/windage tray and cylinder head(s). Should this be important, properly clean the top while clearing out the bores of the cylinders using a ridge reamer. With the crankshaft rotated, center each connecting rod in the cylinder with a piston while the piston is held by the rings. Keep the connecting rods and caps unmarked with a punch or stamp and put labels using a permanent marker or scribe, without harming the broken surfaces on the joints of the rod and cap. Lower Special Tool 8507 onto the connecting rod, install the connect guides and unscrew the piston from the cylinder. As soon as the bearing is taken out, fit the bearing cap to stop any risks of damage to the mating connecting rod. Use a proper solvent and warm water to clean the pistons, dry them with a towel when you're done, then scrape the grooves on the ring lands with a wood or plastic tool, all without removing the piston pin. Check for excessive damage, indentation and flatness on the connecting rod journal and observe the connecting rod for signs of distortion or bend. Check the piston for a crescent-like taper, shape of a Brazilian nut, signs of wear, grooves in the outer part (skirts) or cracks or damage in the ring lands. For installation, slip the piston rings on and then immerse the ignited piston and rings in clean engine oil. Placed the ring compressor over both the piston and rings, then turn it tightly to make sure the rings do not change their position. Places the bearing hole on the connecting rod and with the hole in the bearing shell, oils the bearing surface with clean engine oil and sets in Special Tool 8507 Connecting Rod Guides. Make certain that both piston pins have their raised "F" marks facing toward the engine block front and their connecting rod oil slinger is located on the front side as well. Put engine oil in the cylinder and rotate the crankshaft until the centering pins are directly in the cylinder bore. Fit the rod and piston into the cylinder, using a hammer handle tip to tap the connecting rod on the journal and gently lower the piston with the same hammer handle. After removing the connecting rod bolts, called Torque to Yield Bolts, replace them, lubricate the rod bolts and gasket on the bearing, re-assemble the connecting rod and bearing and tighten the bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) plus 90°. After that, put in place and attach the cylinder head(s), timing chain and cover, cylinder head covers, oil pan and gasket/windage tray, filling the crankcase with the right amount of engine oil and give the negative cable to the battery a final connection.
