2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Water Pump on a 3.7L Engine on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: The water pump used with a 3.7L engine gets fastened to the upper end of the engine's timing chain cover. To do this, begin with the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system. Service constant tension hose clamps with the Snap-on hpc-20 tool for the larger sizes, plus remember to put on safety glasses. You should notice a number or letter on the tongue of constant tension clamps; when replacing, only use clamps with the same number or letter from the manufacturer. Unscrew the two fan shroud-to-radiator screws and unhook the coolant overflow hose. The next step is to take off the accessory drive belt, the clamp on the lower radiator hose and the lower hose at the water pump. Do not attempt to remove the water pump from its place in the timing chain cover, but take out the seven mounting bolts and one stud bolt instead. Take out the water pump and toss out the gasket. Clean the surface of the gasket where they meet, checking that no part of the sealing area is ruined. Then, check the water pump for cracks, leaky shaft seals, any loose/rough turning bearings and signs of the impeller rubbing on the pump body or the timing chain case/cover. Clean the places where the gasket will meet, place the water pump and gasket into position, insert the mounting bolts and tighten them to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) torque. Rotate the pump by hand so the impeller doesn't come in contact with the timing chain case, then secure the radiator lower hose to the water pump. Let the tension off from the belt tensioner and lower the drive belt over the crankshaft to be routed correctly. Consult the Belt Routing Label in the engine compartment when unsure. Make sure the upper and lower sections of the fan shroud are securely linked for all air to be directed into the radiator and afterward install the two fan shroud-radiator screws. Measure to be sure the fan blades are at least 25 mm (1.0 inches) away from the fan shroud. Pour in the cooling fluid, attach the negative battery cable, turn on the engine and look for leaks.
