2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Thermostat Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain Your Thermostat for Optimal Engine Coolant Performance on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before servicing the engine coolant thermostat, be sure the radiator draincock is closed when the engine is still hot and the system is pressurized. If the coolant is not contaminated, empty it into a clean receptacle for later use. Before fitting a new thermostat, check it is the exact model and type stated for your vehicle's make and engine. First, take out the negative battery cable, then remove any liquid in the cooling system and lift your vehicle onto a hoist. Get rid of the splash shield, after which open the clamp on the lower radiator hose at the thermostat housing and pull out the lower radiator hose. Following that, take out the bolts that attach the thermostat housing, the housing and then the thermostat itself. After cleaning the mating parts, put the spring side of the thermostat into the machined recess on the timing chain cover. Lay the thermostat housing on the top of the timing chain cover, bolt it in place with the two housing-to-timing chain cover bolts, tightening them to 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.), making sure the housing is held evenly and the thermostat is right in the middle to prevent damages or leaks. Drop the thermostat housing on the lower radiator hose, replace the splash shield over it and put the car on the ground. Fill the cooling system, reattach the negative battery cable to the battery, turn on the engine and let it run while you watch for leaks.
