  A: Before working on a universal joint with snap rings, tap the outside of the bearing cap with a drift to free up the snap ring. Unscrew snap rings 1 from both ends of the yoke and make sure the yoke sits so the grease fitting is pointing upwards. Suspend one socket with an inside diameter matching the bearing cap under the yoke on a press and use a second socket that is smaller than the upper bearing cap above, pushing the lower cap through the yoke. Should the bearing cap not release from the yoke with just your fingers, tap the close side of the yoke's ear next to the cap to loosen it. With the bearing cap taken off, turn the yoke over, press it in the press and straighten cross 1 so you can access the remaining bearing cap 2 and remove it. As you remove the cross or bearing cap, keep it aligned so you avoid scoring the sides of the yoke tube and causing damage.
