2007 Dodge Nitro Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Check and Install a Piston Ring Set on 2007 Dodge Nitro?
A: Before you fit used rings or installed new rings, use a clean cloth to wipe the cylinder bore and insert each ring in the cylinder, making sure its gap is taken at a 12 mm or 0.50 inch distance from the cylinder's bottom. Pull the piston downward to make the ring stand straight and then measure its end gap with a feeler gauge; if any rings fail the test, change them. Wipe the grooves of the ring clean and check for burrs before measuring the ring side clearance, using a feeler gauge to make sure it goes into the space between the ring land and ring, replacing whatever rings are outside the specs. Turn the ring around the piston to see if it can rotate in the groove freely. The blue dot points down after installation, so be sure the No. 2 piston ring is put in with its Dot facing upward on the top of the piston. Set the durables in order: oil ring expander, upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. First, fit the oil ring expander onto your piston, then position the upper side rail across the rail groove and the expander, push until secure and do the same for the lower side rail. Set the ORN piston ring 2 inside the cylinder and add the ORN piston ring 1 above it with the piston ring installer. Always leave at least a 45° distance between the expander ring gap and the side rail gaps to avoid aligning it above the piston pin or in the piston's thrust direction.
