2007 Jeep Commander Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair the Automatic Transmission Filter in a 545RFE System on 2007 Jeep Commander?
A: To work on the 545RFE Automatic Transmission fluid and its filter, first put the vehicle up on stable supports, then put a shallow, wide pan beneath the transmission pan for the fluid. Open the front and side bolts and the ones at the rear of the pan, then separate the front so that fluid can flow into the pan. With all the bolts out of the first pan, support the pan flat, take out any remaining bolts, lower the pan away from the transmission and pour all the remaining fluid into the drain pan. After that, unscrew the filter attachment (1) from the valve body, remove the oil filter and separate it from the oil pump and empty the fluid in the filter into the drain pan. Inspect the oil filter seal in the oil pump and if it looks good or is properly fitted, just clean it; if it isn't or looks bad, throw it away. If you're changing the cooler return filter (2), remove the filter with Oil Filter Wrench 8321 and get rid of both the filter and used transmission fluid properly. Review the underside of the pan and magnet; any surplus metal can be ignored so long as the clutch isn't slipping or there's no lag in the gear shift. Rinse the pan and magnet with a suitable cleaner and scrape off the original sealant from the sides of the transmission case and pan. When you install the primary oil filter, make sure the seal is right along the oil pump body and is not put on the filter neck. When the main oil filter seal is worn out, you should use an appropriate tool to fit a new one inside the hole in the oil pump. Set the new filter onto the valve body and the oil pump and use a torque wrench to attach the primary filter (1) to the body at 40 in. lbs. In case the old cooler return filter is blocked, install a new one (2) onto the transmission and tighten it to 9.5 Nm (7 ft.lbs.). Apply a thin line of Mopar(R) RTV sealant around the case edge of the transmission, set the pan in position and fasten the bolts so that each is tightened to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.). Lift the vehicle once more and add Mopar(R) ATF +4 to the transmission.
