2008 Dodge Challenger Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install an Axle Shaft on 2008 Dodge Challenger?
A: The halfshaft should be installed after you've replaced the axle seals with Installer 9223. Place the halfshaft isolation washer which is designed for two-way use, onto the shaft and then join the halfshaft to the wheel hub/knuckle assembly, using your hands to fasten the hub nut there. Examine the slinger for any damage and make sure it is straight so it doesn't come in contact with the axle seal. Install the halfshaft close to flat rather than at too great an angle to not damage the seal. Put a drop of Mopar(R) Gear and Axle Lubricant (75W-140) into the halfshaft inner joint bearing journal and after using new circlips, fit the halfshaft to the rear axle assembly, checking axle seals for any damage and verifying the proper installation by pulling outward on the joint. Move the rear axle assembly into the correct place, make sure the propeller shaft matching points are aligned and then start the rear shaft bolt/nut by hand. Put in two nuts and bolts from the rear axle to the crossmember and tighten them to 220 Nm (162 ft. lbs.), then do the same for the rear axle front mount isolator, using 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.). Once the inner joints on the axle and transmission jack are properly connected, unload the axle by taking away the screw-type under-hoist jack stands. Fit the propeller shaft coupler-to-axle flange bolt/nuts and torque them to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Remove the lock plug from the rear axle, insert 1.2L (1.3 qts) of 75W-140 Synthetic Gear and Axle Lubricant, replace and tighten the plug to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.). Install the exhaust system, lower the vehicle, torque the halfshaft hub nut to 157 ft. lbs. and then install the wheel center cap. After that, mount the new wheel/tire assembly and turn the lug nuts to 150 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) before finishing the process by lowering the vehicle.
