2008 Dodge Durango Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Chain on 2008 Dodge Durango?
A: Before you start, disconnect the negative battery cable and allow all the coolant to drain from the cooling system. After that, uninstall the right and left cylinder head covers and remove the radiator fan. Rotate the engine until the timing mark on the damper is lined up with the mark on the top of the timing chain cover and the camshaft sprocket should be at 12 o'clock for the no.1 TDC exhaust stroke. To get to the chain guide fixtures, first eliminate the power steering pump and then undo the plugs on both cylinder heads. Remove the oil fill housing and you'll find the timing chain cover and crankshaft damper which you should take off. Fix the primary chain tensioner to its lower position, so it holds the cover over the oil pan's opening and keeps the assembly behind the left secondary chain tensioner in place. Next, allow the secondary chain tensioners and the camshaft position sensor to be removed, so that no damage comes to the camshaft target wheel. Do not turn just one shaft without the other to keep them from damaging each other. Continue with the negative battery cable disconnected and, using the Camshaft Holder 8428, unscrew the bolts that secure the sprockets. With left cam sprocket loosened, slowly turn the left camshaft clockwise about 5 degrees until it sits in a neutral position. Repeat the method for installing the right camshaft sprocket. After you have removed the idler assembly bolt, move the idler and crank sprockets forward together to pull the primary and secondary chains free. Disconnect both tensioner arms and both chain guides, then take out the primary chain tensioner.
