2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Service and repair of the transaxle fluid and its filter should be done after reviewing how often your operating schedule recommends to change them. Get fluids marketed as Mopar® Atf+4, then clean the filter and wipe the oil magnet in the pan dry while replacing the transmission oil. If you take apart the transaxle, change both the fluid and the filter. Elevate the car on a hoist and put a drain container below the oil pan in the transaxle. Free the pan bolts and tap one corner to make it slide away, so the oil drains before taking the pan off. Unplug the wires from the oil filter first, then shift the old filter and install the new one with all its nuts, tightened to 5 Nm (40 in. lbs.). Use a bead of Mopar® Atf Rtv (Ms-Gf41) to fill the space between the fluid filter and oil pan, then clean the pan and magnet, reinstall the pan with Mopar® Silicone Adhesive and tighten the oil pan bolts to 6 Nm (50 in. lbs.). Fill the engine four quarts of Mopar® Atf+4, start the vehicle and let it idle for a minute or more. Applying the parking and service brakes, use the selector lever to test each position and finish by leaving it in park or neutral. View the fluid level for the transaxle and add fluid to bring it 3 mm (1/8 in.) below the lowest indicator on the dipstick. Once 82°C is reached as the transaxle operating temperature, transmission should start to shift. Should the temperature be 82°C (180°F), check the fluid level again. Put the tip of the dipstick into the transaxle opening to stop dirt buildup inside.
