2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove the Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: First, straighten the front wheels and secure the steering wheel with a holder before touching the rack and pinion. Take off the negative battery cable and isolate it and after that, open the cap on the power steering reservoir and use a siphon pump to drain all the fluid from there. Lift and support your vehicle, then take out the nuts and wheel and tire assembly from each side. On both ends, keep the stabilizer bar link's lower stud still and take off the connecting nut from the stabilizer bar. If the rack and pinion needs the outer tie rods, loosen both the tie rod jam nuts first. Keep the outer tie rod stationary and twist off the nut from the outer tie rod, then use Special Tool 9360 to remove each end of that same tie rod from the knuckle. After that, remove the engine mount thru-bolt, the fore-aft crossmember front mounting bolt and then all four rear bolts of the crossmember and lastly remove the crossmember itself. Unscrew and push the pins securing the heat shield over the right side of the rack and pinion and take out the heat shield. Remove the engine mount in the back and then unscrew the power steering pressure hose routing clamp from the crossmember's back part. Take off the screws that hold the two stabilizer bushing retainers onto the crossmember. Slide the two cushions out of the stabilizer bar by using the slit, gently turn the bar any time needed and take it out through the opening for the front driver wheel. Remove the tube nut holding the return hose to the power steering rack and pinion and the next tube nut attached to the pressure hose, then remove both bolts attaching the rack and pinion to the crossmember. Pull upward on the dust shield to make the pinch bolt on the intermediate shaft extension visible, then take off that bolt and slide the intermediate shaft extension off the rack and pinion shaft. Turn the rack and pinion to the designated place and pull it out through the left wheel opening. When required, look closely at the inner tie rod, counting how many times you wind it, as shown in the manufacturer's instructions.
