The system works on a rack and pinion system whereby the pinion gear is attached to the steering column, the other is the rack gear encased in a metal tube and is used to move the wheels when the steering wheel is turned. Only place each jam nut on its side of the tie rod for now, leaving it loose. With a ratchet, work the right side tie rods outward until the internal stop blocks further movement and then do the same to shorten the left side tie rods. Put the right side tie rod through the opening in the center of the cradle crossmember reinforcement and out through the passenger side opening, then raise the left side tie rod and turn the rack and pinion to the left until it's in the middle of the cradle crossmember. Attach the rack and pinion, then tighten the three bolts with 183 Nm for the 14 mm bolt and 95 Nm for the 12 mm bolt. Center the rack and pinion by adjusting the tie rod to the left and attach the power steering pressure and return hoses to their proper connectors on the rack and pinion. Tighten each hose tube nut to 31 Nm before moving on. Screw the return hoses and pressure hoses at the back of the cradle crossmember to 23 Nm and then install the power steering fluid cooler on the reinforcement, tightening it with a torque of 11 Nm. Bring the power steering cooler hose back into place, attach the clamp and then install the emissions Vapor Canister and NVLD assembly. Both ends, attach the outer tie rod to the Steering Knuckle with a new nut and tighten to 75 Nm with the crowfoot wrench the whole time. First, place both wheel and tire assemblies, secure them with the nuts in sequence to half torque and then to the torque specified at 135 Nm. Before putting the vehicle down, make sure the two front wheels point forward. Place the intermediate shaft coupler over the rack and pinion pinion shaft and slide it down, ensuring the steering wheel is only rotated a little while doing so. Guide the roll pin into the coupler using Remover/Installer Special Tool 6831A and then pull it into the center of the pinion by hand. Slide the dash seal cover onto the coupler and lock it by inserting mounting screws and restore the carpet around where the dash seal cover is. After removing the steering wheel tool, fill the power steering, expel any air, search for spots where the fluid is leaking and adjust the front toe to its correct settings.

Take out the screws joining the power steering pressure hose routing clamp to the crossmember at the rear and remove the rear engine mount. Undo the two screws attaching the stabilizer bushing retainers to the crossmember and take both retainers out. Pull the two cushions out via the slit in their back, then carefully turn the stabilizer bar to get it through the opening beside the driver's wheel. Unscrew the tube nut on the return hose, then the tube nut on the pressure hose and end by fastening bolts securing the power steering rack and pinion to the crossmember. Work the dust cover up to expose the bolt that holds the intermediate shaft to the rack and pinion, then take out the bolt and slide the intermediate shaft off the rack and pinion. Set the rack and pinion in the required position and pull it out by the left wheel opening. Should the outer tie rods need to be removed, remember their rotation position by counting them before installing the inner tie rods.
