2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Rod Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to measure Rod Bearing Clearance on 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: While removing the bearing caps, mark them, since you cannot switch them over during setup as they are not identical. Put the bushings over the rods so that the tangs go into the machined holes and check that the tangs in the cap line up with the rod. Set all your portable-style rods on the same bank before relocating. Available sizes for connect rod bearings are standard as well as 0.025 mm (0.001 in.) and 0.250 mm (0.010 in.) undersizes. Make sure to use two bearings together, keep new and old bearing pieces separate and never file the rods or bearing caps. Check the taper and curve of the connecting rod journal. Rotate the crankshaft so the rod is at the bottom of its stroke. On the connecting rod bearing surface, wash away any oil. Place a piece of Plastigage almost half an inch from the oil hole across the surface of the bearing shell in the cap, re-assemble the cap on the rod with this and tighten until the rod bearing surface is flush with the crankshaft. After taking off the bearing cap, check the Plastigage readings against the scale on the package to find the oil clearance and look for any differences between the ends. Record each reading and if the bearings' clearance goes above the wear limit, replace them.
