2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Front Steering Knuckle on 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: If your hub and bearing go inside the steering knuckle, center them with the wheel speed sensor placed on the trailing end of the knuckle. Match the threaded holes on the mount and screw in your bolts evenly using a crisscross pattern to fully tension them only to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.). Prior to fitment, wipe both ends of the ball joint stud and the top part of the knuckle with a clean cloth and the Mopar® Brake Parts Cleaner. Slide the knuckle onto the ball joint stud and secure a new steering knuckle to the ball joint stud nut, tightened until it reaches 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) plus 180° turn. Align the official halfshaft stub shaft with the hub and bearing assembly, but don't touch the clevis-knuckle bolt bolts while setting it in place. For the lower left knuckle, set the strut assembly so its lower end is mated to the upper end of the knuckle, put the two strut clevis-to-knuckle bolts in and tighten the nuts to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.) plus an extra 90° turn. Next, place your thumb where the next knuckle is and press as you did for the prior one. Before installing the outer tie rod stud, wipe off both the tie rod stud and knuckle steering arm surface and only after that start the nut and tighten it to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.) plus another complete 245° turn. Secure the wheel speed sensor routing bracket to the knuckle and strut assembly by setting the screws to 8 Nm (71 in. lbs.) and then to 10 Nm (89 in. lbs.). Secure the wheel speed sensor connector and its routing clip to the bracket fixed on the frame rail and join the vehicle wiring to the sensor connector. Attach the brake shield to the knuckle, tighten all three screws to 8 Nm (71 in. lbs) and then set in place the brake rotor and the disc brake caliper and adapter assembly. The sensor wire should be shifted away from the moving parts when it is near the wheel speed sensor. At the end of the halfshaft stub shaft, screw the hub nut in place and tighten it to 160 Nm (118 ft. lbs.) by having a helper brake the wheel. Bolt in the tire and wheel assembly, set the wheel mounting nuts to a torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), lower the vehicle, pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure it's firm, check and top up the brake fluid as needed and perform wheel alignment.
