2008 Dodge Magnum Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Rack and Pinion Steering for All-Wheel-Drive on 2008 Dodge Magnum?
A: If possible, before repairing the rack and pinion for all-wheel-drive, attach the outer tie rods of the original rack to new inner tie rods, so that all the threads have a similar length and the toe setting is correct. Set the rack and pinion where it should go and install the two lower bolts, plus the upper bolt and nut and tighten them all to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). Above the inside tie rod bellows, put in heat shields and tighten them with 10 Nm screws. Each time, put a new O-ring on the end of the hose, slide it into position, lubricate it and fit the pressure hose to the rack and pinion, securely tightening the tube nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Coat the O-ring on the return hose with automotive grease, put the return hose in place and secure it with a tightened tube nut at a force of 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Locate the steering splines and secure the coupling to the gear shaft, screwing the new pinch bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Join the outer tie rod ends to their knuckles, add the nut on each side and tighten it till it reaches 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.). Add each tire and wheel assembly, tightening them firmly by hand until the wheel mounting nuts are set to 150 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) for normal models or 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) for police packages. Lower the vehicle and unclip the positive lead from the battery, connecting it back to the post you just loosened. Run power steering fluid to top up the system, then realign the wheels as needed to meet specs. After that, tighten the jam nuts on the tie rods to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
