Before starting, remove the battery negative cable and take out some power steering fluid from the pump's reservoir. Raise and secure the vehicle and once held, unscrew the wheel mounting nuts and take off both the front tire and wheel. When you loosen the jam nut and turn the inner tie rod, make sure you don't touch the bellows; remove the clamp from the tie rod and test the mobility of the bellows. At every knuckle, loosen the nut on the outer tie rod, followed by removing the nut from the outer
Tie Rod End at that place. With Special Tool 9630, release the outer tie rod from the knuckle and afterward, remove the steering coupling pinch bolt at the rack and pinion. Untighten both the return and the pressure hose tube nuts and unplug the hoses. Take out the screws and heat shield above each inner tie rod bellows and then unbolt both upper and lower mounting points, removing the rack and pinion. In case you must remove the outer tie rods, spin the gear and note the number of revolutions you count. Only if needed, attach the original outside tie rods to the replacement inner tie rods, making sure the number of threaded angles is just the same as you had in the beginning. Hold up the rack and pinion and bolt it in place using the lower mounting bolts and the upper bolt with nut. Tighten all bolts to 102 Nm. Note: Install the heat shield above each inner tie rod bellows, with screws that are tightened to 10 Nm. Apply clean power steering fluid to a new O-ring on the pressure hose, put it over the steering tube and tighten the tube nut to an even 47 Nm. Lubricate the O-ring on the return hose, fit the end of the return hose onto the rack and pinion and tighten the tube nut to 47 Nm. Fit the splines together, hold the coupling in place on the shaft and bolt it securely with a pinch bolt turned to 54 Nm. Add each outer tie rod end to a knuckle and secure it with nuts tightened to 85 Nm and after that install the tire and wheel, tightening the wheel mounting nuts to 150 Nm. Set the vehicle down and then reattach the negative cable of the battery. Fuel the pump storage tank, set up the pump and position the wheel toe and connect the tie rod nuts by tightening them to 75 Nm. In RWD, the procedure is also alike, but the bolts are adjusted as needed and the gear position in the travel must be checked before installing the coupling.
