2008 Dodge Sprinter 2500 Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2008 Dodge Sprinter 2500?
A: Take care to install the rack and pinion on the vehicle, applying torque in three separate steps. It's important to hotfix the steering bolts by tightening them to 18 ft. lbs., then 59 ft. lbs. and finally turn them an extra 90° for the final torque. Push the steering shaft universal joint all the way onto the rack and pinion shaft until the hole fits into the radial groove in the steering shaft. After that, put the universal joint on the rack and pinion and secure it with the matching bolt, setting its torque to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Lightly attach both hoses to the rack and pinion before tightening the hold down bolt to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.). Attach the spring clamp plates and then join the left outer tie rod end and jam nut to the inside tie rod. Join the outer tie rod ends with the steering knuckle, tightening both to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) plus 60° extra. Attach the top stabilizer bar link to the stabilizer bar after that and then put on the front wheels. Once the power steering is filled and bled, reset the toe adjustment and check the steering system for any leaks.
