  A: Start the maintenance and repair of the alternator by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery. After that, lift the generator off the engine. With the decoupler open, put Special Tool #8433 into it and make sure it is lined with the hex end of the generator shaft. The right-hand threads on the generator shaft are standard, so to loosen the decoupler, rotate the tool around clockwise while holding it at the generator end. With the tool out, manually pull the decoupler away from the generator.
