2008 Jeep Commander Front Cross-Member Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Front Cross-Member on 2008 Jeep Commander?
A: First, attach the sway bar to the engine cradle before fitting the cross-member to the cross-member mounts. After that, fit the lower control arms. Put the engine cradle up into the correct spot, fit the bolts into the engine mount holes and tighten the four engine cradle bolts. Use the marks on the cradle to fit it to the right location, then tighten the front cradle bolts to 203 Nm (150 ft. lbs.) and the rear ones to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.). Set up the steering assembly as guidance suggests and then lower the entire engine onto the engine mounts, tightening the bolts to the proper torque. For 4WD, insert the front differential and secure it with the bolts. As you tighten each set, tighten the rear bolt and the right differential bolt at 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) and the two front differential bolts at 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Mount the shaft between the engine and transmission, install the propeller shaft, connect the differential flange to the right halfshaft, add the vent hose and connect any electrical connector. Light oil on the TSB and install the lower clevis bolts. Tighten them to 169 Nm (125 ft. lbs.) and finish by tightening the knuckles and halfshaft nut to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.) if your vehicle is so equipped. Fit the ball joints into their correct places on the knuckle and with the lower ball joint nut at 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) and the upper ball joint nut at 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) lock them into position. Put the loose end of the tie rod into the steering knuckle and tighten the ball stud nut to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Link the wires from the speed sensor to the harness connectors and then clip the harness support clips. Next, install the rotors, deal with the front differential and make sure it has the proper levels, put in the skid plate on the front and then adjust front wheel alignment if necessary.
