2008 Jeep Commander Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: When Should Parking Brake Shoes Be Replaced and What Inspections Are Necessary on 2008 Jeep Commander?
A: Replace riveted brake shoes when the thickness is as little as 0.78 mm (1/32 in.) from the head, but wait until the bonded lining is worn out to a full 1.6 mm (1/16 in.). Look at the lining contact and make sure the shoes are making complete contact with both sides. A drum that's bent or tapered will cause the lining to have contact only on one side and it must be replaced. If the adjuster screw assembly has damaged threads or is very rusty, replace it. Throw away any brake springs or retainer parts that show wear, distortion or have collapsed and also replace the springs if you find brake drag, as too much heat can impact and damage them. If any of the brake shoe contact pads on the support plate seem worn, rusty or the plate itself is warped, replace the plate.
