2009 Jeep Commander Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Parking Brake Shoe on 2009 Jeep Commander?
A: First, lift the vehicle, take the rear wheel and tire off and then you can modify the parking brake. Once that's done, take the 2 caliper bolts apart and remove the caliper, making sure it doesn't hang from the brake hose. Take out the rubber access plug on the back of the rear disc brake support plate. Should it be needed, raise the parking brake by turning the brake adjuster tool until you reach the star wheel at the end of its stroke. Take the rotor off the axle hub flange and remove the four axle flange nuts. Pull the axle shaft out from the rear differential. You should now use needle nose pliers to detach the shoe to shoe return spring and next, pull the adjuster out of the assembly. Remove the shoe to shoe return spring on the other side with brake pliers. To remove the shoe hold-down clips and pins, hold the clip so it snaps together and move the clip up until the head of the pin passes the notch, then pull off both the clip and pin. Afterwards, lift the handle for the park brake to remove the shoes from the lever.
