2008 Jeep Patriot Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Handle an Air Bag Replacement on 2008 Jeep Patriot?
A: Turn off the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) by unplugging and isolating the battery negative cable, then wait for two minutes as the system capacitor discharges. Put on rubber gloves, safety glasses and a long-sleeved shirt to avoid being hurt by anything sharp in the air bag unit. Guidelines state nothing should go into the side air bag or form a gap between the air bag and headliner. If the air bag isn't working properly but hasn't deployed, use the directions for handling unreleased air bags. Before removing the air bag, read the service instructions for air bags after they have deployed. First, break the battery negative cable's connection and let it sit apart for two minutes. Take out the headliner from the car. Take out the connector from the back of the inflator and opposite side of the rail where the C and D-pillars are. Undo the metal clip across the side curtain air bag rear tether from the inner roof side rail above the D-pillar, then do the same for the metal clip on the front tether at the inner A-pillar. Afterward, remove the two plastic fasteners that keep the front tether attached to the inner A-pillar. Take out the seven side curtain air bag screws from the U-nuts attached to the inner roof side rail and then remove the two plastic push-in fasteners that secure the air bag and bracket to the roof rail inner side. Next, remove the side curtain air bag from the car all at once.
