2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Extract the Crankshaft from an Engine Assembly on 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The process begins by removing the engine from the vehicle, then takes out the transaxle. After that, take out the drive plate/flex plate and the crankshaft rear oil seal. Set the engine on a proper repair stand, empty the engine oil and remove the oil filter. After that, the crankshaft vibration damper needs to be removed, together with the engine mount support bracket. Get rid of the covers for the front timing belt, the timing belt itself and the cover for the rear timing belt. Both the oil pan and the oil pump pick-up tube must be taken out. The following step is to separate the crankshaft sprocket and oil pump, remove the balance shafts and housing assembly and then pull out the crankshaft position sensor. If either piston or connecting rod replacement is required, the cylinder head must first be taken apart. Each cap of a connecting rod should be marked with the cylinder number using a permanent pen or paint marker, preferably not a stamp or punch since this could damage the cap. Unscrew the connecting rod bolts and caps, not harming the fracture rod and cap surfaces and do not put these bolts back into the engine. Remove every bolt from the bedplate on the engine block and then tap the bedplate away from the dowel pins, using a mallet and working slowly so you don't damage the parts. Be very careful handling the crankshaft so as not to harm the target rings and lift it from the cylinder block so it doesn't come into contact with the main bearings or journals. Then, detach and throw away the target ring mounting screws and lift off the target ring from the crankshaft.
